Alot of what has grown to inspire me is very much rooted in the midwestern craft tradition; sewing, needlework, kitschy projects, quilting, and so on. These hobbies share many of the same principles of graphic design; color, composition, line, pattern, geometry, organization of information, collage, etc. I think what most intrigues me about craft as design or design as craft is the fusion of old techniques with new ideas and new forms, but I want to see it pushed beyond Papier-mâché and Cross-stitch.

It's printed on newsprint with no other information other than the title. Hopefully there will be more issues in the future!

so I will spend a Monday morning in a much nicer way, a rare way indeed, drinking coffee in my room with a working internet connection. I've recently discovered two new websites that keep my interest and make me excited about doing and learning things: Design Sponge and the NY Times. Design Sponge has got me excited about Portland again. Recently there was a post showing some stamp designs by a Portland graphic design student that really made me want to kick my shit up a notch, in a good way. And soon Grace from Design Sponge is coming to Design Within Reach to speak and mingle with women running or starting design-based businesses. I do not fall in either category, but I am indeed an information leech and would like to see and hear what is up. It is happening Tuesday, February 26th from 7-9pm. Apparently I should RSVP, but I'm still a bit apprehensive about going given my current lazy student standing. But the email is: designsponge@gmail.com, just in case.
